Glaucoma is the second-leading cause of blindness in the world (next to cataracts), and it affects over three million Americans. Unfortunately, there is no cure for glaucoma, so it can either be managed through medication or surgery. Even with those preventative measures, around 9% to 12% of cases still result in loss of sight.

As with any chronic condition, medication to treat it can add up and get very expensive. Ontario Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing has a look at five ways you can save money on glaucoma medication.

  1. Go Generic

Much like any other prescription medication, you may be able to save by switching to a generic version of the medication you’re using. It’s important to know, however, that some generic medications can have different side effects than their brand-name counterparts, and they can also be more or less effective, so talk to your doctor before switching and be sure to note any differences in the result of the medication.

  1. Practice Your Technique

If you’re not skilled at putting in eye drops, lots of medicine may go to waste. If you struggle with this, practice with eye-wetting drops or something cheaper until you have the skill down pat.

  1. Go Insurance Shopping

Some insurance plans will pay for a larger portion of the pharmacy’s price than others. So you’ll want to shop around both your insurance policy and which pharmacy you use to find the combination with the best price.

  1. Buy in Bulk

Most prescriptions you get from the pharmacy will cover you for 30 days. But many insurance companies offer 90-day versions that you can get through the mail at a reduced price per drop. Check with your insurance provider to see if this is something you can take advantage of.

  1. Consider Alternative Therapy

Many ophthalmologists are starting to believe that using a laser to reduce eye pressure in place of drops is more effective, especially for people in the early stages of the condition. This is something that you’ll want to talk with your doctor about if you’re interested.
