How to Fight Stress While Traveling

Traveling can be exciting. It can mean going to a new place, revisiting a favorite destination, or going somewhere to see friends and family. While it can be a fun adventure, traveling can also be a major stress-inducing experience.

To help you fight stress and enjoy all aspects of your vacation or trip, Ontario Center has a few tips to help:

Sign up for TSA Pre-check: Getting pre-check means going through TSA is much easier, plus it’s less crowded. By paying a fee and agreeing to a background check, you don’t have to take your shoes, belt, or jacket off. You can also keep your liquids and laptop in your carry-on. The line is also significantly shorter and moves faster.

Give Yourself Time: Make sure to arrive at the airport with plenty of time. So, if the lines to check your bag or go through TSA are long, you don’t have to stress about missing your flight. Start your trip off stress-free and get to the airport early.

Plan Your Schedule: Make sure you plan your schedule so that when you arrive at your destination, you don’t have to worry about what to do. You can be strict about the schedule or keep it as a loose guide, but knowing things to do beforehand can keep your trip stress free.

The Link Between Oral Care and Wound Care

On the surface, it seems surprising that what happens in your mouth can affect how wounds heal, but there is a definite connection between the two.

According to this article, poor oral hygiene can release bacteria into the bloodstream and cause complications for wound healing—especially things inside the body like pneumonia and bone infections after orthopedic surgery.

Ontario Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing with has a reminder to on the three key components to oral hygiene—not only for your mouth’s health but for your entire body.

Brushing

The American Dental Association recommends brushing at least twice a day and preferably, after meals. Place your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle against the gums, and move the brush back and forth gently in short strokes. Be sure to cover the entire surface of every tooth and brush your tongue too.

Flossing

If you’re not flossing as much as you should be, you’re not alone. A study found that just 30% of people floss every day. In fact, more people don’t floss at all (33%) than floss daily.

If you’re using traditional dental floss, break off around 18 inches of material and wind it around a finger on each hand. Rub it in between each tooth, moving the floss away from the gum with up-and-down motions.

Mouthwash

Using a mouth rinse after brushing will really help kill any bacteria you may have missed while brushing and flossing. In addition to reducing bacteria, mouthwash can reduce plaque and lower the risk of gingivitis and gum disease. Mouthwash with fluoride can help prevent tooth decay as well.

How to Handle 3 Potential Holes in Your Auto Insurance

When it comes to auto insurance, there are cases where the standard coverage isn’t enough. And it always seems to be in those margins where we need the coverage the most.

Fortunately, there are types of insurance for just about every situation that can crop up.

Ontario Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing has a look at three potential holes in a typical auto insurance policy and how you can close them up.

  1. Driving a New Car

The old adage says that a vehicle’s value drops in half when it’s driven off the lot, but that’s not quite true. A new vehicle does lose over 20% of its value in the first year, however, so if you’re in an accident early on, you could owe more on your loan than the cash value of the car.

To rectify this, you’ll want GAP (Guaranteed Assed Protection) insurance, which covers that difference if your vehicle is deemed a total loss.

  1. Accident With an Uninsured or Underinsured Driver

More and more people are driving without insurance, and it can make for a difficult situation if you’re in an accident with one of these motorists. You could be stuck paying bills yourself for your injuries or if damage is done to your property—through no fault of your own.

Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist coverage, however, is available on most policies, so if this is something you want for a little more peace of mind, you can talk to an agent about it.

  1. A Need to Protect Personal Assets

If you cause a crash and exceed your limits, you risk any personal assets that can then be used to pay for others’ injuries and damage to their car. But by adding an umbrella policy to your coverage, you can have extra protection of your personal assets and future assets if the liability goes over your initial limits.

Statistics from the FBI show that there were nearly 850,000 complaints of identity theft, data breaches and other forms of fraud in 2021, which was up 7% from the year before and added up to losses of $7 billion.

Identity theft can strike anywhere at any time—whether you’re at home, online, or on the road. Ontario Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing has a look at warning signs and way to prevent becoming a victim at each location.

How to Protect Yourself at Home

Sensitive financial documents travel through the mail, and one way to ensure that these documents reach you without being intercepted is through a service the United States Postal Service offers called Informed Delivery. This service allows you to preview letter-size mail through an app or website and also sends you email notifications to update you on packages being sent your way. You can sign up at https://informeddelivery.usps.com.

How to Protect Yourself Online

The first step to protect yourself online is to use secure passwords. Avoid numbers that are associated with you like an address, anniversary, or birthday. Experts suggest using special characters (!, ~, @,$) along with numbers and letters, and if you’re familiar with any phrases in foreign languages, that’s another tip that is helpful to avoid scammers guessing your password.

If you’re given the option, also opt-in for multifactor authentication. This is when you are prompted to have a passcode emailed to you after attempting to log-in to an account, especially if it’s on an unfamiliar device.

How to Protect Yourself Away From Home

Be careful of using public Wi-Fi networks because most of them are not secure. One thing you can do, if data constraints are not a concern on your mobile device, it to just turn Wi-Fi off while you’re traveling. This way, you won’t be connected to an unsecure network without realizing it. Also be sure to keep devices in a safe place while traveling. If you’re leaving anything in a hotel room, utilize the in-room safe while you’re out and about.

Ontario Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing With 5 Ways to Reduce Your Sugar Intake

One of the hidden dangers of the typical American diet is how high it is in sugar. If you look at labels, there’s added sugar in almost everything, and that’s not to mention natural sugars and carbohydrates that break down into glucose.

Ontario Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing has a look at five things you can do—as part of your daily routine—to reduce your sugar intake.

  1. Use Fruit as a Natural Sweetener

Instead of adding a spoonful of sugar to cereal or buying flavored oatmeal or yogurt, use fresh or frozen fruit for natural sweetness and added nutrients.

  1. Limit Your Beverage Selection

Instead of drinking sugary sodas or heavily sweetened coffee drinks, stick with lots of water, black coffee, and unsweetened tea. For many, making just this change alone can knock off several hundred calories per day and greatly reduce sugar intake.

  1. Have Fruit for Dessert

It’s okay to have a sweet treat every now and then, but if you need something sweet for dessert on a nightly basis, switch to fruit to curb that craving.

  1. Limit Certain Condiments

BBQ sauce is loaded with sugar, and ketchup isn’t much better. There are “no sugar added” varieties of these sauces available at stores, but most restaurants won’t carry them. For a healthier alternative, use salsa, mustard, or hot sauce.

  1. Use Naturally Sweet Alternatives When Baking

If you’re one who enjoys making cookies, cakes, and pies, you can either reduce the amount of sugar you use or switch out sugar or something naturally sweet, such as unsweetened apple sauce, stevia, honey, or agave.
